For years I've donated artwork to raise funds for conservation and other worthwhile causes. The majority are displayed here, along with some given as gifts or kept, and a few I've sold (of those sold I used my own reference material). In my initial paintings I used reference material collected where ever I could find it, old calendars, magazines and books. I was quite naive back then and too excited about painting realism to understand this was plagiarism. Not long after I learned that it wasn't appropriate, I started photographing my own reference material. As someone who loves being in nature this wasn't a hardship for me and has lead to incredible adventures, resulting in thousands of photos (see Photo Gallery). I'd like to thank those photographers who's images I inadvertently borrowed during my initial art development, your work is an inspiration to me. I flew to Russia September 2006 with friend John Packowsky and his friend fellow biologist Mike Gibeau. John's been researching brown bears in the Kronotsky Preserve on Kamchatka's east coast for five years, prior to this John helped me with the Northern Bear Awareness program in Prince George. I loved the opportunity to study and photograph these fascinating creatures along with stellar eagles, reindeer, and seals in Russia's unique and fascinating volcanic landscape.
